Lot 2394
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 18 mm, 2.00 g, 12 h), 'Derived Gordian Group C' (?). ꓘISΛIIIHICR[...]LIIƆITSVHE Laureate, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to left, seen from behind. Rev. TNIISNƆI[...]SƆNTИCTINƆRƎ Mars standing front, head to left, holding spear in his left hand and placing his right on shield set on ground. A curious and unusual piece struck on a very thin flan. Holed and with a few light marks, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

This is a curious piece in that it was struck on the flan the size of an 'aureus', but the weight corresponds to the lighter 'quinarii'. It is catalogued here as a derivative of the Gordian Group C, namely of the portrait on lot 2393 above. The reverse, on the other hand, shows us a highly stylized representation of Mars holding a spear and shield.
